Our Verdict:
Bobby Baldwin became the youngest WSOP Winner in history at the tender age of 27 by taking the 1978 Main Event, only to be bettered by Stu Ungar two years later. Somewhat unfortunately for him, it was also the first year that the prize pool was divided among the top 5 players, leaving him with a 1st place payday of $210,000.
Doyle Brunson once said of him: “He’s quite a poker player…no matter what the game is.” While being regarded as the best No Limit Hold ‘Em player in the world at the time, Bobby had also taken down the Seven-Card Stud Championship and Deuce-to-Seven Lowball the year before winning the big one.
He even wrote a section of Brunson’s ‘Super System’ before moving ‘upstairs’ to the casino boardrooms in 1982. He has been President of the Golden Nugget and the Bellagio and has also been involved with the Mirage and MGM Grand. All in all, a legend of the game.
